About This Place

Nestled in the heart of Orange, CA, Restaurante Doña José offers an authentic taste of traditional Mexican cuisine that invites you to savor every bite. This unassuming gem on E Chapman Ave is a cozy, no-frills spot where the focus is purely on delivering rich, homemade flavors that transport your palate straight to Mexico’s vibrant food culture.

The menu, though deceptively simple, boasts a variety of standout dishes that guests rave about. Imagine delighting in the deep, complex notes of Mole Rojo Con Pollo Arroz Y Frijoles, where tender chicken is bathed in a luscious, spiced red mole sauce served alongside perfectly cooked rice and beans. Or sinking your teeth into Picaditas Con Carne Asada, where the fresh corn masa base provides a satisfying bite to hold up savory, grilled carne asada. Fans also swear by the Pipian Con Pollo, a vibrant, nutty pumpkin seed sauce cloaking juicy chicken that bursts with earthy warmth.

One of the most talked-about highlights is the Chileatole Verde Y Goditas, a comforting green chili soup that’s both refreshing and hearty. Don’t miss the Enfrijoladas, tortillas drenched in a rich, homemade bean sauce that wraps you in a cozy, familiar embrace with every forkful. For the coffee lovers, their Rico Cafe offers a robust finish to any meal.

The atmosphere is charmingly intimate, with space for about a dozen diners — creating a true “hole-in-the-wall” feel that’s become part of its charm. The service is friendly, and the staff’s dedication to authentic flavors shines through in each dish. While the menu’s print may not always match the offerings or prices, as some diners note, what truly matters is the consistently delicious food and the warm, inviting experience.

Customer voices speak volumes about the experience here: Justin Smith praises the chorizo tacos as the best around, especially recommending the green salsa as “worth the visit alone.” Tom Wong highlights the unbeatable combination of Menudo, burritos, and tacos that left his whole family satisfied and wanting more. Lupe Jimenez perfectly encapsulates it as a “hole in the wall” with food so good you want to try everything — from chicken tacos to picaditas. Authenticity is a recurring theme, echoed by awatson222 who cherishes the homemade corn tortillas, and Courtney Cox who enjoyed a flavorful carne asada burrito.

If you’re seeking a genuine Mexican culinary adventure in Orange, Restaurante Doña José is a heartfelt invitation to indulge in rich, soulful dishes made with care and tradition. Whether you’re craving comforting soups, savory tacos, or a perfect carne asada, this little spot offers an unforgettable, authentic dining experience that keeps locals coming back again and again.

this place has the best chorizo tacos around. ignore the menu, it hasn't been updated in years; the prices are wrong and it doesn't represent all the food the serve. skip the red salsa, the green is worth the visit alone.

Our family was famished after my son’s soccer game; and we found this place. We ordered Menudo, 2 burritos (1 Asada & 1 Chicken) and a asada taco. My wife lived the menudo-first time trying it, and my daughter exclaimed that that was the best burrito she ever had. Sorry we didn’t take photos, because we were so hungry at 2:30. Try it you’ll like it.

It's the perfect definition of hole in the wall type of restaurant. The food is amazing! I recommend trying everything once. My fav has to be the chicken tacos and the picaditas!

Very good carne asada burrito. It was flavorful. The quesadilla was ok. Make sure you at least know basic Spanish because otherwise ordering will be tough

AUTHENTIC, homemade goodness in a small place (probably seats about 12 people total). I got a BRC burrito and it was tasty, but the homemade corn tortillas looked delicious! I'll have to try them next time.
